After graduating from the Technical High School in Mainz, he completed his civilian service in a retirement home. After studying electrical engineering in Darmstadt, he worked briefly as a development engineer at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. He then completed a two-year newspaper traineeship at the Westfalenpost (Funke Mediengruppe). From 1995 to 2017, he was employed by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), most of the time in the science editorial department as an editor & 1st reporter. His series "Joachims Experimente" is part of the programme with the "Maus zum Hören" (since 2001 on WDR) and is one of the oldest formats in German-language children's and youth radio.
